- I note that this proposed law is not focused on scanners
- in vehicles, but is, in fact, much broader in its impact.
- The proposed law would effectively outlaw any handheld scanner
- as well as all mobile scanners. That seems to be total overkill.
-
- Question - Is the information about this bill sent to ARRL?
- Is the knowledge of this proposed bill also posted to
- rec.radio.scanners.
-
- >What if the alternating current power is generated in your car?

- One could argue the intent was to absolutely preclude all
- mobile or portable operation, it could also be argued that
- the legislation has a loophole.
-
- I lost the original post that included the bill's full text.
- Could someone please repost it or email it directly to me?

- Is it illegal by itself in US, to pocess a transmitter designed for

-
- I used to live in SD and has been to that HRO many times, I was back
- visiting and visited that store, oh, boy, they have more stuff now :).
-
- >After mods, the Kenwood does these:
- > Rx: 50-180 300-400 400-512 800-950
- > Tx: 136-180 400-512
-
- I seriously doubt if the Kenwood can lock the PLL (actually receiving)
- below about 90 or 100MHz. And also transmitting the full 400-512MHz. The
- display might say so, but the VFO and the rest might not.
-
- >The Yaesu does these:
- > Rx: 110-180 300-500 800-859
- > Tx: 130-180 400-470
-
- Only diff. is the Kenwood can do AM in all VHF and UHF (may be not 800 band)
- but Yaesu can only do it in the 110 to 138MHz?? (Mine Standard C550/C558A
- can do AM on all VHF but not UHF.)
-
- >At first, I liked the idea of getting FM Broadcast Radio (88-108) on

-
- Mine picked up quiet passages ok, once the loudness is out (high deviation)
- then it's all clipped. Not useful at all.
-

- >the Yaesu does not. Apparently, you can get an optional microphone

-
- Kenwood can also send alphanumeric pagings to other Kenwoods, if that is
- good for you. I really like the idea, but since most people don't like
- Kenwood due to rumors of bad intermod rejection and hard to use interface,
- they are not popular and thus the actual usage is not much besides few who
- own it. Yaesu 530 doesn't have alpha numeric, the speaker/mic is a back-
- lit display and buttons simpler than on the radio. about $100. The new
- Ft-11 micro size single band HT has alpha numeric memory but no alphanumeric
- paging. (also by Yaesu.)

-
- I think almost all HT sold in US includes CTCSS encode and decode while
- most mobile/base only includes encode and decode is optional. CTCSS is
- (depends on whom you asked :) Continuous Tone Coded Squelsh System, aka
- sub-audio tone, also called PL (Private Line) by Motorola, or Select Call
- by GE. It is from about 67Hz to about 250Hz selectable from a table to
- key up repeaters to open squelsh on others' radios.
-
- >Both radios can do VHF/VHF and UHF/UHF, but some people say that this
- >adds interference.
-
- Yes, as it is using the other band receiver to receive far away, thus
- weakening the filter job/design. Currently there is no good cure except
- they put in multiple switched filters.
-
- >The Yaesu has 82 memories, the Kenwood 50 (expandable to 250?). The
- >Yaesu has a light-up keypad, and I don't think the Kenwood does. The
- >Kenwood does, however, have some internal video games :-).
-
- One BIG reason I refused to buy the Kenwood as if I need a video game,
- I can get something else, even to download one for my HP48SX prog. calculator.
- If there are space left in the Kenwood uP rom, why don't they put in something
- useful? like calculating/estimating remaining time battery usage, may be
- even some memory management software.
-
- >The general list of recommended models seems to be: ICOM W21AT,
- >Standard C558, Yaesu FT-530, Alinco DJ-580T with no mention of the
-
- They all have merits, but the only one I would buy (again) is either
- the Standard (which I have a similar model) or Yaesu. But W21AT has
- the cellular phone style microphone being lower in the battery area,
- which is nice doing phonepatch. Alinco's only merit is lower price.
- Kenwood if you want the latest alphanumeric functionality (which I really
- like to have, but not at a sacrifice of other areas.)

- You have hit one of my pet peeves squarely on the head. If I have
- asked for information on speech recognition and I get 1) outdated
- (thus ill-informed) opinions about speech technology, and 2) an
- arm-chair quarterback recomendation to take another approach (clearly
- not from someone who has worked with persons with handicaps), then
- I feel no reply would have been better. (At this point I want to extend
- thanks to all those out in net land who withheld uninformed or
- irrelevent responses.)
-
- Short answer. 1990s technology is far more sensitive to the person's
- needs. First off, it makes him notice his handicap less if he can
- speak to a computer than if he had to operate a suck/puff straw.
- In fact, I doubt that he will operate CW if the adaptation is that
- unnatural. Second, the nature of his handicap leads to rapid fatigue.
- His voice is strong. I don't doubt that he could send CW other ways.
- I am looking for the most natural way. Read that: Human factors
- engineering.

- I have to seriously disagree with you Gil. I have been using PkGold for
- a few years now. I just got my version 9 upgrade and the manual is
- excellent. Not only does it give great detail about PkGold features,
- but goes into details about the necessary TNC features for the specific
- manufacturers (AEA, Kantronics). It also has very good and basic descriptions
- of the various modes it supports. It is a handy size and easy to carry
- around if you need to. If you really want to make a comparison, check it
- out against the PcPakratt for Windows manual.
-
- Yeah, you shell out a few bucks for PkGold but not much different that any
- of the other first class packet/multi mode software packages. Unfortunatley
- you cannot realize the full usefullness of this program without using it
- for a few months. After that, you wonder how you will ever do without it.
-
- I own registered versions of PkGOld and PkGold900 for different computers
- using different TNCs. The context sensitive help and the command line help
- (example: Enter a TNC parameter then hit F1) is by far the best in the
- industry.

- Some more info, from packet.
- At one point they were at 33.28N 118.W (sic), course 142 degrees, 65
- revs, 11.9 knots. A later message indicates that they were into
- Mexican waters, making 11.5 knots at 68 revs. That's pretty good

-
- I used to live in San Diego before, so I am especially interested in this
- story. Just like the LA Mayor could not fire Chief Gates of LAPD, I think
- the SD SO chief is also not "afraid" of the CS (Dianne) of SDC. (that's
- just my guess responding to your comment of "fuss.." I think they thought
- they have to enforce "something" in order to prevent people from using
- their frequencies again, preventing abuse, even at all cost, protect their
- frequencies.... Only that is an administrative frequency, not a dispatch
- one, and is reserve for emergency etc. I wish Chris could get his HT
- back, but I think once he handed it over, it'd be very hard unless he has
- a powerful lawyer and friends around :). I remembered some years ago
- when I was still living in SD, TV news were showing reports of civil rights
- violations in the County Sheriff's jails (beating of cellmates, either
- convicted or just in custody), and many many reports of similar cases.
- It seems that the upper levels allow this to happen, and since the Sheriff
- is voted in by local citizens, their structure is even more independent
- than city PD. There was also the case of a "rookie" Sheriff Deputy who
- gunned down a driver after pursuit of traffic violation or something
- like that, claiming that the driver was going after him in the parking
- lot. With many witness contrary to theirs, they closed up the area for
- investigation. One person died, and nothing happened, and not too long
- later, it's gone on the news and people forgot about it. With all these
- precedence, I am not sure if this action by the SO is purely accidental
- or merely not understanding "emergency traffic". I think they think they
- run the "law".
-
- You think I must have a problem with them? Nope, I rarely have a run-in
- with the Sheriffs at all when I was there. (not my area I usually go, not
- cover by them.)
-
- I wish Chris didn't hand in the HT and contest the Sheriff Office, and
- hopefully ARRL or some groups would support them. I am quite confident
- the Sheriff do NOT have a case at all :). (Thanks, at least the court
- system is still mostly independent, in most cases.)
-
- For a good reading of the story, read the editorial on April issue of
- Popular Communications (or latest issue), it basically covered the whole
- story. but I'll give a bit here, where the juice is, so you don't have to
- wait till getting the Pop. Com. :)
-
- For those who don't know but the first half, where the emergency called
- was made. Here is the second half of the soap opera:
- The civilian employee (not a sworn law enforcement officer) who contacted
- Chris to come in for the talk, and did the warning about prosecution etc,
- (name was in last article, but I forgot now.), was in hiking some weeks
- later, and got lost himself (got sick in Pop. Comm. article version),
- and he radioed the Sheriff Office which sent out a chopper (rather than
- land transport for the first case), to resure him, only turn out that
- he didn't need much medical assistance later, costing the county a few
- hundred bucks. He claimed authorized to use the radio, but in reality,
- he was not on duty, and thus has no authority (those who understand
- regulation more should correct here if it is not, I am only tell the
- story, not making it.) He was using similar channel/freq. as in first
- case. Of course it is ok, since he worked for the SO.
-
- Somehow the news got out, and was published (following the interesting
- first) on local paper (and later whole story on some tabloid in a
- shorten version :), put up in HRO in SD.), can you imagine the howling
- and "arrrrrrr" the people put out? Thus, with so much fuss later,
- somehow one County Supervisor had the city/county granted Chris an award
- for "Good Samaritian". And now both the FCC local guy and the Sheriff
- Dept are low key and kept little comment on that. Was it a bought out?
- Was it used for political fight b/w the SO and CO? I don't know, but
- I think Chris should have his HT back, still.

- I don't have a list of other gateways, but you should probably be able to
- find a list of them from an ftp site. Try ftp oak.oakland.edu. The only
- other one that I use is n8fow (Detroit). That's 44.102.48.2. Good luck.
